Stockton’s local Conservative MP has paid tribute to the heroes of World War Two ahead of VE Day 80th anniversary celebrations.
VE Day marks the end of the Second World War in Europe on 8th May 1945, when the Allies accepted the surrender of Nazi Germany. Winston Churchill marked historic victory by looking to the future, saying ‘we must begin the task of rebuilding our hearth and homes, doing our utmost to make this country a land in which all have a chance’.
Celebrations to mark the anniversary include a military procession and flypast in central London, street parties and community events, and the King and Queen will even host a tea party for veterans and members of the Second World War generation at Buckingham Palace.
2,500 beacons will also be lit across the UK - including five across Stockton on Tees - a powerful reminder of the resilience and unity that have defined our country since VE Day.
Preston Park Museum is also hosting a VE Day street party alongside the cobbled street, complete wartime music, and a Book of Reflection for visitors. On 8th May, pubs will also be able to stay open for an extra two hours so people can raise a glass to mark the end of the four day celebration.
Stockton’s local MP Matt Vickers said
“The 80th anniversary of VE Day marks one of the most significant moments in our nation’s history, as we remember the generation of brave heroes who fought to keep us safe both abroad and at home.
We should all pay tribute to those who served in World War Two. I’ll be marking VE Day, and I hope everyone across Stockton does too.
The stories of those who fought in the Second World War must never be forgotten, and the UK coming together to commemorate this anniversary is a vital part of ensuring their legacy lives on.”
