Matt Vickers MP has joined veterans, local representatives and members of the community at the St George Hotel at Teesside Airport for the unveiling of a new memorial honouring those who served at the former RAF Middleton St George during the Second World War.
The memorial recognises the service of both Royal Air Force and Royal Canadian Air Force squadrons based at the airfield during the war, and pays tribute to the personnel who served there, including those who lost their lives.
RAF Middleton St George played an important role during the Second World War and has a proud military history which remains closely connected to the area today.
Matt Vickers MP attended the unveiling alongside local veterans and representatives, including hardworking local councillor Deborah Laing.
Stockton West's Conservative MP Matt Vickers said:
“It was a real privilege to attend the unveiling of this memorial and to recognise the remarkable history of this site.
“Thousands of servicemen from Britain, Canada and beyond played their part here during the Second World War, and many made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the freedoms we enjoy today.
“It is incredibly important that we continue to remember their courage, their service and their sacrifice, and that future generations understand the role places like RAF Middleton St George played in our history.
“A huge amount of work goes into making occasions like this possible, and it was great to see so many veterans, local representatives and members of the community come together to pay their respects.”
Matt also thanked Cllr Deborah Laing for her continued work in the local community and for supporting efforts to preserve and recognise the area’s military heritage.
