Matt Vickers MP has demanded urgent action over what he has called an “unacceptable” disparity between the service Stockton residents receive at Haverton Hill Recycling Centre and that available to residents in neighbouring Middlesbrough.
Stockton residents can face waits of up to a week for an appointment at Haverton Hill, while Middlesbrough residents using the same site can access same-day appointments.
The Stockton West MP has also challenged Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council over its £25 charge for residents using a van to dispose of household DIY waste, when Middlesbrough residents using the same facility do not appear to face an equivalent charge.
With Stockton residents already paying more in Council Tax than their neighbours in Middlesbrough, Matt has written to the Council’s Chief Executive demanding answers and calling on the Labour administration to scrap the £25 charge and ensure Stockton residents receive a fairer service.
Stockton West’s Conservative Party MP Matt Vickers said:
“Stockton residents are being asked to pay more, wait longer and get less. That simply isn’t good enough.
“It is completely unacceptable that somebody from Stockton can be told to wait up to a week for an appointment at Haverton Hill while somebody from Middlesbrough can use the very same site on the same day.
“Stockton residents can then be charged another £25 to dispose of household DIY waste in a van, while their neighbours across the border do not appear to face the same charge.
“Residents already pay enough in Council Tax. They deserve a service which is at least as good as that being offered to people from a neighbouring authority at the same facility.
“I want the Labour Council to explain why Stockton residents are getting such a raw deal, scrap this unfair £25 charge and take immediate action to make sure local people can access Haverton Hill.”
