Local Conservative MP Matt Vickers has told Stockton’s Labour Council to ‘pull your finger out and get it down’, as he writes to the Council Chief to express his ‘complete and utter disgust’ over the lack of progress on demolition.
Stockton’s Labour Council has let the Golden Eagle building sit rotting for years, claiming they didn’t have the money to get it sorted. Matt secured the funding from the last Conservative government, and as such there is no reason for the eyesore to still be standing.
Today, the local MP has written to Stockton Borough Council’s Chief Executive, Mike Green to demand answers, and urged the Council to ‘pull your finger out’ and demolish the Golden Eagle.
Many local residents are unaware that the Council owns the site - making it all the more appalling that Labour-run Stockton Council allowed the site to get into the derelict disaster that it currently is.
The Eagle is now so dangerous and dilapidated that Cleveland Police have even been forced to warn residents to ensure they and their children stay away for their own safety.
Last week the local MP brought a senior Wetherspoons boss to the site to discuss the potential of a new pub and restaurant on the site once the Golden Eagle is finally demolished - just one of a number of investment options.
Stockton’s Labour Council previously claimed it was unable to demolish the Golden Eagle. This prompted local MP Matt Vickers to secure the money from the last Conservative government in 2021.
Stockton’s Conservative MP Matt Vickers said:
“I am utterly disgusted at the lack of progress on demolishing the Golden Eagle once and for all.
“Many residents don’t realise that Stockton’s Labour Council actually owns the freehold to the site, which makes this sorry situation all the worse. I secured the money from the last government to solve it and the council have now been sat on that cash for 4 years.
“That’s why I’ve written to the Chief Executive of Stockton’s Labour Council to ask why it still hasn’t been demolished, and when the Council will finally get on with the job.
“My message is clear - pull your finger out and get it down.”
